Energy saving calculator

The benefits of replacing your old lighting with new LED technology are clear; you will immediately decrease energy usage, lower your carbon footprint and see a significant reduction in your operating costs. The payback periods can be as little as 18 months with LED lights having a rated life of around 6 years (50,000hrs) and potentially much longer**.

Many businesses are also eligible for Enhanced Capital Allowances (ECAs) and Carbon Trust loans, and in the public sector organisations can seek funding from Salix Finance to help assist with the transition to this new low carbon technology.

Our calculator compares the benefits of switching from traditional incandescent sodium lighting to our new LED high bay lights and can be adjusted for usage profile, years and electricity costs. Our 150W LED high bay is equvilant to a 450W SON or Metal halide unit which has a 400W lamp with the control gear adding another 50W to the overall load.

* An electricity conversion factor is used represent the average carbon dioxide emission from the UK national grid per kWh of electricity used at the point of final consumption (i.e. transmission and distribution losses are included). To calculate your electricity footprint the guidance from DEFRA is to use a rolling average over the last five years of 0.53 Kg CO2 per kWh. However, to calculate potential savings from efficiency measures the UK government use a figure of 0.43 Kg CO2 per kWh as any reduction in demand would result in the gas turbine power stations reducing their output first, and these more efficient types only emit 0.43 Kg CO2 per kWh, and therefore we have used this figure in our calculations.

**Our calculator does not include the total ownership costs (e.g. capital expenditure and maintenance costs) but these will further enhance the actual savings calculated over the life span of LED lights of more than 50,000 hours compared with 2,000 to 10,000 hours for traditional lights.

Lighting survey

We can undertake an on-site lighting survey to determine your current lighting profile (usage and types of lighting). A comprehensive report with your energy, carbon and cost savings will then be prepared which will also include a projected payback period. We are confident that the results will demonstrate the benefits of LED lighting and the surveys are usually completed free of charge.
