Carbon Trust loans

Carbon Trust interest free loan scheme

In today’s economic climate, it may be difficult to get the credit you need to upgrade to more energy efficient equipment. The Carbon Trust provide loans which could be the solution. They not only offer interest free credit to help you make your business more efficient, they also help you lower your energy bills and cut carbon emissions.

The Carbon Trust’s Energy-Efficiency Loans are unsecured and interest free, with no arrangement fees and a straightforward application process. Loans can be repaid over a period of up to four years, and many users of the scheme have found that their energy savings more than cover their repayments.

Eligible companies

On 29th June 2009 changes were made to the size of the loan and size of enterprise supported by the loan scheme.

Small or medium-sized businesses (SMBs) in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland can borrow from £3,000 to £400,000.

An SMB is defined as either an SME which itself is defined as an enterprise that employs fewer than 250 full-time equivalent employees and has an annual turnover not exceeding £43m and/or an annual balance sheet total not exceeding £37m; or a business that do not qualify for participation in the Carbon Reduction Commitment. As a guideline, this typically includes businesses with an annual electricity spend less than £500,000.

EU rules on state aid generally prevent loans being extended to the transport sector, to companies producing, processing, or marketing agricultural or fisheries products, or for export-related activities.

Size of loan offered

The size of the loan offered and its repayment period will be based on your projected CO2 savings, which will be assessed by the Carbon Trust. To see how much your project could save try the Carbon Trust's Loan Calculator.
